God is exactly who and what God is, to you. You are the single solitary authority on your understanding of God. Absolutely no one can tell you who God is to you. That’s all your domain. I hope you take the time to at least consider for yourself how you conceive and understand who, what, where and how God IS, to you. This activity precedes the question about if God IS. Because your answer may vary depending on your conception and hence definition of “God.” If the God of your understanding is as the presence of Love. For you, there’s no question about if God IS, especially if the presence of Love is unmistakable in your daily experience. But if that experience is one that is without Love, for you, there actually is a question as to if God IS. It is a question that demands an answer. It is a question that will be answered if your desire for clarity is sincere, again, regardless of what your conception of God.
The possibilities are endless as to possible conceptions of who/what/where/how God is.
Is God a Divine being up in the sky? Is God a special power or presence? Is God a code word for the realm of that which we do not fully understand, like the ways Life/the Universe unfolds? Is God an energy that permeates everyone and everything? We live in a time when the possibility of spiritual freedom is opening up for more and more souls. Yet, I get that my proposition of freedom around one’s spiritual understanding to include individual conceptions of God that will likely evolve over time may seem strange when often the prospect of questioning what one has been told or taught about God has been said to reflect a lack of faith. I don’t equate the act of asking questions of one who is teaching and speaks with authority about any topic, including God, religions and spiritual belief systems. If what’s being proposed or taught is true, wouldn’t it withstand and prove true despite clarifying questions? I should hope so. If not, upon what does it stand? Fear? Intimidation? Force? Mass indoctrination?
Transcending Faith & Borrowed Faith
One of the great gifts I received in this lifetime was the freedom to discover God for myself. Sometimes I wonder if that’s the gift we have all received and just only realize it at varying degrees and times depending on our life circumstances. When I met with Eddie Bailey of Savoy Media Group to give my testimony for his Transcending Faith video series he asked what were my thoughts about borrowed faith. I hadn’t heard the term before and asked him to clarify. It was a couple of years ago so I can’t tell you his exact words. What I remember from his explanation is that there are ways and times that someone else’s faith is what we lean on until circumstances are such that we can lean on our own faith. For example, a child who’s faith is based on what their parents taught them and believe will eventually have to cultivate their own faith. I of course then thought about the times I’d leaned on the faith of others, even though a specific belief system was never forced on me. I began to wonder what it would be like if all souls were encouraged from childhood to develop their understanding and beliefs about God and Life while being presented with information about various perspectives.
I suspect that’s what I’ll do when I’m responsible for raising up a soul or crew of souls when I’m a parent. Meanwhile, it’s how I choose to serve as teacher/student of Life. I’m very clear about my perspectives because they’re born out of my own experiences, exploration and extensive consideration of philosophy, psychology and spiritual perspectives. I can’t actually imagine how I could be so very convinced about my perspective and understanding about God if it was solely based on what I’d read, heard or was taught and hence it was only borrowed. Nah. That just wouldn’t work. I’m more of a transcending and evolving faith type of woman. Besides, when would I get to stand on my own spiritual two feet?
How about for you? Fill in the blank: “God IS __________.” What’s your understanding about who, what, where and how God is? How did you come to this understanding? Did you borrow the faith and/or beliefs of your family of origin? How much did the popular beliefs and traditions of your childhood influence what you now believe? What do you think about the idea of everyone having the freedom to cultivate their own understanding of God?
